Mazda 323 Axle Shaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What are the methods to repair oil leaks from axle shaft seals on Mazda 323?
    A:
The oil leaks are common since the driveaxle oil seals or the speedometer drive gear oil seal and O-rings are often worn. These seals can be replaced relatively simple, because they can be repaired in most cases without the need to take off the transaxle of the car. The driveaxle oil seals are fitted on the sides of the transaxle, at the inner ends of the driveaxles, which connect into the gears of the differential side. When there is a suspected leak of a driveaxle oil seal ensure that the vehicle is elevated and safely placed on jackstands. A loose seal will indicate the presence of lubricant on the side of the transaxle, under the seal. First of all, take off the driveaxle. Carefully loosen the oil seal of the transaxle bore using a screwdriver or pry bar without damaging the seal bore since this can make the new seal leak. In case the oil seal cannot be removed using a screwdriver or pry bar, then it will need a special oil seal removal tool. Installing the new oil seal requires a seal installer, a big piece of pipe, or a big deep socket to act as a drift, and forcefully drive it into the bore, fully seated, it should come out flat on the surface of the transaxle housing. Lastly, apply lubrication to the lip of the new seal with automatic transmission fluid, but ensure not to destroy lip of new seal during the process of reinstalling the driveaxle.
