Mazda 323 Wheel Hub Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Should home mechanics disassemble the rear wheel bearing and rear wheel hub assembly for replacement on Mazda 323?
    A:
A home mechanic should not disassemble the hub and bearing assembly because it requires special tools to bear replacement, but the hub and bearing assembly may be removed and brought to a dealer service department or repair shop to have the bearing replaced. In the case of drum brake, loosen the wheel lug nuts, lift the vehicle and then firmly place it on jackstands before removing the wheel. The next thing to do is remove the hub retaining screws, the center hub cap and extract the brake drum off the hub. Unstake and remove the rear hub spindle hub locknut with a hammer and punch and remove the hub and bearing assembly in its location and the brake assembly. On models that fall between 1990 and 1994, the rear axle hub is replaceable by removing it with the bearing, although it will need special tools and then one should take the assembly to an automotive machine shop. In the case of 1995 and subsequent models, the entire assembly of the hub and bearing should be changed. In disc brakes in models, the procedure begins by loosening the lug nuts of the wheel and raising the vehicle. Once the wheel and center hub cap have been removed, the hub locknut at the rear hub spindle is unstakeed and removed, then the brake caliper and brake disc are removed followed by the removal of the hub and bearing assembly on the spindle. In rear drum brake models, installation requires that the mounting bolts of the brake assembly are tightened to the recommended torque, a hub and bearing assembly is mounted to the spindle with a new locknut and the locknut lip is staked into the spindle groove to stop loosening. Install the brake parking brake cable/tubing, hub cap, brake drum, drum retaining screws, and wheel and then lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the required torque. These disc brake bikes, fit the dust cover back on, screw in the mounting locations, and then the hub and bearing assembly goes onto the spindle, the brake disc then next with a new locknut, which also goes into the spindle groove. Lastly, screw on the center hub cap, brake caliper, and wheel and drop the vehicle and screw the lug nuts to the required torque.
  • Q: Is it advisable to leave the pressing of the front wheel bearing and front wheel hub from the steering knuckle to a professional mechanic on Mazda 323?
    A:
Due to the special tools and expertise required to press the hub and bearing from the Steering Knuckle, this job should be left to a professional mechanic. However, the steering knuckle and hub may be removed, and the assembly taken to a dealer service department or other repair shop for further assistance.
