For four-cylinder models, the PCV valve is located on the crank case vent oil separator at the front side of the engine block, beneath the intake manifold. Begin by removing the intake manifold, then loosen the hose clamp and disconnect the PCV hose from the valve. Use a small screwdriver to carefully push the retaining ring up over the locking tab, and pull the PCV valve out of the separator. Installation follows the reverse order of removal. In V6 models, the manufacturer specifies that the PCV valve must be replaced if removed. For V6 engines, the valve is situated at the left rear corner of the valve cover for the rear cylinder head; disconnect the PCV hose. In other engines, the valve is found on the rear valve cover. Disconnect the negative battery cable and move the power steering reservoir to the side. Using pliers, squeeze the PCV hose clamps, slide them back, and remove the hose. For all engines, turn the PCV valve counterclockwise to remove it from the valve cover, noting that it must be replaced each time it is removed due to damage to the locking mechanism. Mazda 6 PCV Valve

The Mazda 6 PCV Valve is a small one-way gate which expels blow-by gases out of the Mazda crankcase and diverts them into the intake to burn them once more, reducing the amount of emissions and ensuring the engine oil remains cleaner. Within its metal or plastic shell is a spring-loaded plunger which is responsive to intake-manifold vacuum, almost closing in cases of high vacuum at idle to avoid a lean mixture, then opening further when the engine accelerates or load increases and the volume of gas in the engine increases. This basic movement cools the crankcase, stops sludge and even serves as a flame arrestor by sealing backfiring or turbo boost pressure waves.
