What precautions should be taken when replacing the Steering Knuckle and Wheel Hub during assembly on Mazda 6?

All the suspension bolts must be changed to new ones during the assembly. The first thing to do is to remove the wheel cover and loosen but not remove the driveaxle/hub nut. Unscrew the lug nuts that are attaching the wheels, lift up the vehicle and sit it on jackstands and then remove the wheel. The second step is to take off the brake caliper and not detach the hose, the caliper mounting bracket and the brake disc. Unhook the brake hose of the strut and suspend the caliper of the coil spring with a strand of wire so as not to leave the caliper hanging on the brake hose. Take off the ABS wheel speed sensor and bolt. Divide the tie-rod end and the steering knuckle arm. To avoid inner CV joint damage, insert some piece of wood above the lower control arm and detach the two lower CV joints of control arms and steering knuckle. Take off the driveaxle/hub nut and lever the driveaxle out of the hub using a tethered piece of wire to hold the end of the driveaxle. Next, disconnect the upper control arm ball joint with the steering knuckle. Installation requires pushing the knuckle and hub assembly into place, pushing the driveaxle into the hub. Install the knuckle with the ball joints and screw in the nuts to recommended torque. CAUTION: One should ensure that all the suspension bolts are changed when assembling. Install the tie-rod end on the steering knuckle arm and screw the nut into the recommended torque. Prior to securing the fasteners of the control arm, elevate the outer end of the control arm with a floor jack to recreate normal ride height. Install the two disc-locating bolts, the brake disc is then placed on the hub and the caliper installed. Fit the driveaxle/hub nut and screw it down, but not to the full extent. Install the lug nuts, wheel and the lug nuts at the correct torque. Lastly, install the wheel cover and then screw the driveaxle/hub nut to the required torque. Check and adjust, when needed, the front-end alignment.

Mazda 6 Steering Knuckle

The Mazda 6 Steering Knuckle is the main connection point between the suspension, steering gear and the front wheel hub in a sedan that allows each wheel and tire to go over the hump and roll without issue when a driver turns the steering wheel. Made as a hard one-piece upright, each Steering Knuckle provides mounting bosses on the upper strut or control arm, the lower arm, the tie-rod end and either a spindle or a bolt-in hub to keep the wheel in place, yet free to turn. Early Mazda rear-wheel-drive models engaged the spindle with the casting, and the load was transferred to tapered roller bearings in the mounted hub. When the line was switched to front-wheel-drive, subsequent Mazda Steering Knuckle assemblies took a distinct sealed bearing hub onto which the drive axle runs, making it easier to perform maintenance on the bearings while enabling power to be passed on to the wheel. Since launch and through subsequent 6 updates, those two styles have been the primary variations, the spindle style being applied on non driven or older cars, and the hub style prevailing on modern cars. Both kinds replace the outdated kingpin with upper and lower ball joints, which have less friction, less weight and more suspension travel. All Steering Knuckles are designed to survive the life of the car, but hard impacts or ball joint tapers that are out of round may require replacement to ensure accurate steering feel and tire alignment.
