Mazda 6 Thermostat

The Mazda 6 Thermostat is made to maintain the engine in its optimum operating temperature range to ensure smooth engine performance and to avoid overheating and sluggish warm-up periods. This type of small closed-loop device is situated in a housing next to the radiator and continuously monitors coolant temperature, and blocks or releases flow to the radiator to ensure that the motor does not run very hot or very cold. Later Mazda 6 models place the Thermostat housing nearer to the water pump to reduce the time that the coolant takes to reach the heat exchanger and warm up. Early Mazda vehicles were based on simple mechanical components that applied a flexing bimetal strip to engage a valve, whereas most modern components use a wax pellet capsule that expands as temperature rises, driving a plunger that opens the coolant passage in an elegant, precise action. The wax style is fast reacting, and since it contains no electronics, it is also reliable even if it is subjected to thousands of cycles. As the fundamental job remains the same, the use of wax instead of bimetal provides newer Mazda engines with more stable operating temperatures, hence better fuel consumption and reduced emissions in daily driving. The engine version is automatic, and it will automatically reset itself whenever the ignition is switched on, unlike in homes or RVs where there are programmable cabin controls whereby the driver has to adjust them. Periodic coolant flow enabled by an effectively operating Thermostat also contributes to consistent heater output during a cold morning and prevents thermal stress of crucial internal components, which leads to the increased durability of the Mazda powertrain.

Mazda 6 Thermostat Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and replace the thermostat on Mazda 6?
    A:
First thing that has to be done is to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. The cooling system must be emptied. You can save and reuse the coolant if it is new enough and still in good condition. To locate the thermostat housing, follow the lower radiator hose to the engine. Loosen up a hose clamp then detach a hose from a fitting. In case of sticking, take adjustable pliers when you're near the end of it, twist it so as to break this seal and then pull off. A worn out or rotten hose should be removed with an installation of another one in its place. Swapping hoses causes damage to already corroded, pitted or otherwise marred outer surface of thermostat housing cover that seals with them more than anything else. If yes, replace thermostat housing cover. For four-cylinder models remove engine drive belt and power steering pump. Remove bypass hose (if equipped) from thermostat housing. After loosening bolts on a thermostat house, remove it. Thermostat cannot be disassembled so you have to replace this whole unit along with associated house units. Battery tray and battery are pulled out on 3.7L V6 engines. Unfasten fasteners so as not to damage thermostat housing cover once it's detached from its place. If there's sticking at this point tap lightly using soft-face hammer until freeing occurs. The breaking of gasket seal causes some coolant spillage; therefore get ready for that too just in case your car requires such action before being operational again like check for leakage and reasonable operation of thermostat. After all these realize removal of o-ring then get rid of old thermostats also present inside flange areas devoid of dirt at all times within both mating sides; Check hoses flaws - if any replace them for new ones; Assemble manifold located on four-cylinder models followed by using molded gasket for the thermostat housing. Radiator hose should be reconnected, and then put on a housing and tightened the bolt. Heater hose must also be hooked up again. On V6 models insert thermostat with spring-end in and use the rubber gasket or O-ring to fix this problem before it worsens. Just ensure that jiggle valve is up at 12 o'clock when you finally finish with installing your thermostat. Put bolts back into their places and install cover of thermostat housing. Lower radiator hose can in such case be connected to its cover over thermostat housing. IF it is not still tight, replace it now; Refill cooling system by air bleeding system prior to starting engine till normal temperature has been reached; check leakage, right work of the thermostats.
