Mazda 6 Throttle Body

The Mazda 6 Throttle Body controls the amount of air flowing to the cylinders to ensure that the engine responds to the driver's pedal in a sharp burst of power and even idling. It is located between the air filter box and the intake manifold and contains a butterfly plate, which folds open when the accelerator is pressed, increasing the amount of airflow and instructing the powertrain computer to increase injector pulse width to the correct percentage for the right fuel mix. The early Mazda vehicles that operated on Throttle Body injection, a self-contained unit with its own injector or two on top of the plate, had the advantage of fuel injection without redesign of manifolds, but later models operate on multi-port systems with the Throttle Body now only metering air. The plate is accompanied by a bypass passage connected to an idle air control valve to maintain steady idle and a throttle position sensor to monitor plate angle. Previously the plate applied to be connected through a mechanical cable to the pedal, but in the majority of recent Mazda models, electronic throttle control is applied; the plate is rotated by an electric motor, and the plate sensors and pedal sensors interact, enhancing traction and removing gunky cables. Wear on a shaft or a deposit of carbon may result in a rough idle, but a clean-up will usually restore normal operation, and individual components such as the ETC motor, TPS, or IAC can be changed.
