Mazda 626 Distributor

The Mazda 626 Distributor is the spark traffic controller of the engine, and it is applied to direct high voltage from the ignition coil to each plug at the appropriate time to ensure that combustion occurs within the engine without any discomfort. The early prototypes on the mid-eighties Mazda sedans were mechanically timed Distributor units with breaker points, a cam-driven rotor, and a cast cap with towers for the spark plug leads. This type applied centrifugal weights and a vacuum canister to increase the timing with variations in speed and load, but they were short-lived due to the rapid wear of the rubbing block and contacts, requiring frequent tuning. Towards the end of the 1980s Mazda provided an electronic version that replaced the points with a reluctor and magnetic pickup, making the Distributor more robust and allowing more dwell for hotter sparks, which reduced misfires and improved fuel economy. Both versions were based on a gear at the shaft base that engages the camshaft and also rotates the oil pump, thus wear of the bushing or damage to the gear may pose a danger to both lubrication and ignition. Whichever construction your second-generation 626 may have, a healthy cap, rotor, and advance mechanism are important, as corrosion, sticking weights, or a cracked vacuum diaphragm will slow the spark and reduce power. In older models, coil-on-plug was applied, but knowing how the traditional Mazda ignition functions can be applied to diagnose no-start, rough idle, or loss of power complaints.

Mazda 626 Distributor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disassemble and reassemble a distributor on Mazda 626?
    A:
In order to disassemble the distributor, simply remove it, and then remove the mounting tab plate in the housing. The distributor is fixed in a vise, covered with a cloth, and the two screws removed to take the rotor off. Record the location of the two advance springs carefully prior to their removal then lift the retaining bolt to lift the advance mechanism off of the shaft. The next step is to remove the two screws in order to lift the pick up coil and disconnect the module to the coil with a small screwdriver. Lastly, use two screws to remove the vacuum diaphragm assembly of the housing. To assemble again, lubricate the distributor shaft with lithium grease, fit the arm of the vacuum control unit into the housing and fit it on the mechanism by latching it to the mechanism and turning it to engage. Install pickup coil and it should embrace the mounting tabs before screwing and then place the advance mechanism and connect the springs once again and then the rotor and distributor cap.
