Mazda 626 Ignition Coil

The Mazda 626 Ignition Coil provides the voltage burst that allows the spark plugs to ignite and keep the engine running. The coil bridges the low voltage primary circuit and the high voltage secondary circuit by increasing the normal 12 volts of the car by fifteen to forty thousand volts. Within its plastic or epoxy shell are an iron core, several hundred turns of thick primary wire, and thousands of turns of finer secondary wire. By interrupting the current that passes through the primary windings with breaker points, a trigger wheel, or subsequently an ECU, the collapsing magnetic field causes high voltage to be induced in the secondary windings, which flows to the spark plug. Mazda models earlier on had a single coil that supplied the distributor cap, rotor, and long plug wires. Subsequent Mazda 626 models applied wasted-spark distributorless ignition systems, using a pack of several coils, each igniting two cylinders with one discharge providing useful working force and the other wasted in an adjacent cylinder without benefit. Most automobiles have shifted to Coil-on-Plug or Coil-Near-Plug design with each cylinder receiving its own Ignition Coil and with high-tension leads removed, which improves the accuracy of the sparks and cuts down on energy waste. No matter the style, an Ignition Coil that is tired may misfire, resulting in rough idle, loss of power, poor fuel economy, and a dashboard light. Regular plug and wire maintenance will help the Mazda Ignition Coil cool down and have a longer life.

Mazda 626 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to test the ignition coil and determine if it needs to be replaced on Mazda 626?
    A:
Disconnect the coil wires and remove the boot, and then connect an ohmmeter to the primary circuit. In case the coil primary circuit is in good operation, continuity will not exist. Measure the ohmmeter of the coil secondary resistance and compare it with specifications. Also, check the resistance of primary terminal and case using multimeter. In case of the failure of any of the tests, change the ignition coil.
