Mazda 626 Neutral Safety Switch

Mazda 626 Neutral Safety Switch is an electric sensor that prevents the starter from engaging unless the transmission selector is in Park or Neutral. This prevents the engine from starting and moving the vehicle. The Neutral Safety Switch is a part of the transmission range system and is mounted in the transmission assembly. It detects the manual lever position and sends a position signal to the Mazda vehicle computer. The internal circuit closes when the lever is in the Park or Neutral contacts within the switch, allowing current to flow to the starter relay. The circuit stays open in any drive gear, and the starter remains disabled. The signal indicating the same position also indicates to the computer which gear is selected, allowing it to operate the hydraulic solenoids. The construction utilizes a housing with fixed electrical terminals and a movable contact connected with a shift lever, such that mechanical motion results in an electrical status change. The Mazda Neutral Safety Switch serves as a direct safety interlock. Therefore, a fault with this switch, caused by worn contacts, misalignment, or an open circuit, can cause an unusual no-start condition. This can happen even when the shifter appears to be in the correct slot. An incorrect signal given to the computer can lead to gear confusion. This confuses the computer and prevents the expected gear from applying. This safety device is offered on the electronically controlled automatic transmission equipped Mazda models, including the 626 line vehicles. It is included in the crucial sensor network responsible for coordinating the shift logic as well as the authorization to start on the 626 sedan and coupe.

Mazda 626 Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How to check the Neutral Safety Switch for proper operation on Mazda 626?
    A:
To test the inhibitor switch for correct operation, the engine should start in the Park and Neutral positions of the shifter only. After that, follow the wire from the switch to the connector and remove it. Use an ohmmeter to check for continuity at the switch connector terminals in Park, Reverse and Neutral. Ensure continuity for the following positions: A and B terminals in Park, C and D terminals in Reverse, and A and B terminals in Neutral. This should be done when the ignition is on and shifter in specified positions. To replace the switch, unplug the connector and remove two screws securing the switch to the transaxle. Then, installation is a reversal.
