Mazda 626 Power Steering Pump

The Mazda 626 Power Steering Pump is a pump that allows drivers to turn the wheel with much less effort because engine rotation is converted into hydraulic pressure that is applied to push the steering rack on their behalf. The pump is bolted to the engine and rotated by a V-belt or serpentine belt, which draws the fluid from either an on-body reservoir or a remote tank, establishes pressure, and forces the fluid through a reinforced hose to the steering gear, and a low-pressure return line closes the loop. Within the gear, a control valve divides the flow to produce equal pressure when the car is being driven straight and pressure to one side of a hydraulic piston when turning the steering wheel, such that assist appears in the desired direction. Throughout the production run Mazda applied a standard fixed-flow hydraulic pump, followed by an electronically modulated version that adjusts output based on input signals from a speed sensor and steering angle sensor, resulting in a light feel in the parking lot but firmer on the highway. This Power Steering Pump retains the mechanical belt drive but includes an internal flow control valve that is adjusted by an electronic controller, unlike the earlier more basic style that always provides full flow. The typical symptoms of any Mazda 626 are whining from low fluid, squeal from a loose belt, leaks at hose connectors, and heavy steering at low speed, which represent trouble with pump pressure. When performance declines, factory pressure tests can verify whether the Mazda Power Steering Pump needs to be replaced or rebuilt to guarantee that the sedan maintains its accurate feel.

Mazda 626 Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the power steering pump and alternator on Mazda 626?
    A:
Unscrew the negative battery cable, and then elevate the front of the vehicle and place it firmly on jackstands before taking out the right front wheel and the splash shield. Next you have to loosen the power steering pump pulley bolt, the alternator, and the drivebelt. Then remove the pulley on the pump and disconnect and plug the power steering fluid lines. Eliminate the four bracket retaining bolts of the alternator/power steering pump and remove the pump and the bracket assembly of the engine. The opposite of the removal procedure is the installation. After installation, adjust the tension of the drivebelt, fill the pump reservoir with the particular fluid and bleed the system.
