Mazda 626 Starter

The Mazda 626 Starter enables all drives by converting battery power into cranking force, rotating the engine to life. The electric unit is housed in a small steel casing that holds an armature with surrounding field coils or permanent magnets, brushes and a commutator in the front, and a drive gear on the back, all energized by a solenoid fed by heavy gauge wiring from the battery. With the ignition key set to the START position, the solenoid pushes the drive gear into the flywheel and activates the motor, and the armature turns in the reverse direction, spinning the drive gear around the crankshaft; once combustion starts, an overrunning clutch is engaged and released. The midsize Mazda has been served through the years by two design styles, the conventional direct-drive Starter and a new gear-reduction model that incorporates a small reduction gear between the armature and the drive to provide the vehicle with additional torque with less weight and better operation in colder temperatures. They both actually share the same safety circuit that is located between the ignition switch and a relay, and an alternative neutral safety or clutch switch prevents engagement when the car is in gear. Although there are other applications that have alternative pneumatic or hydraulic systems, all Mazda models within this line remain electric-based like the concept has been. The reputation of Mazda powertrains was further confirmed with the second-generation 626 starting in a few seconds with sure performance even after idling overnight, all due to this well-built Starter.

Mazda 626 Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
What should you do if the starter motor does not turn when the switch is operated on Mazda 626?
    A:
When pressing the switch, the Starter fails to start, be sure the shift lever is in Neutral or Park with the automatic transaxle or in Neutral with the manual transaxle. Ensure you charge the battery and make sure that all battery and Starter solenoid battery terminal cables are secure. When facing the case that the Starter is not running and the solenoid clicks, with the battery fully charged, then the problem might be associated with the main solenoid contacts or the Starter itself. In case the solenoid plunger cannot be heard when the switch is being triggered, then the solenoid is faulty, or the circuit may be open. The solenoid can be tested by connecting a jumper lead between the battery and the M on the solenoid, in the event that the Starter activates then the solenoid is working correctly and the ignition switch, the Neutral start switch, or the wiring is faulty. Should the Starter failure still persist, then disassemble the Starter/solenoid unit, testing and repairing it by a dealer or a well-equipped shop.
  • Q:
How to disconnect and remove the starter motor on Mazda 626?
    A:
Unhook the negative battery cable, then get the front of the car up and place it on jackstands. Remove the wires of the Starter and battery cable to the solenoid under the car. Disassemble the retaining bolts and take off the Starter out of the engine and assembling it back to the engine is the same as it was done to remove it.
