Mazda 626 Timing Belt

The Mazda 626 Timing Belt maintains the crankshaft and camshafts in perfect sync, allowing the engine to breathe at the appropriate time to ensure that the power is in a consistent and powerful state. The Timing Belt in both SOHC and DOHC versions of the 626 engine connects the crankshaft to one or two overhead cams in a routed loop which passes over a tensioner and an idler pulley mounted on springs, and is less noisy and much lighter than the previous chains and gears. Initial designs of Timing Belts would provide approximately 30,000 miles of reliable service, but better fiber reinforcements and profiles of teeth now provide an average of 60,000 miles and above with lower cost and inconvenience for Mazda owners. When not addressed, an old belt could also jump timing or break and instantly shut the engine, and since many versions are interference design, broken valves or broken pistons may be the next outcome. The cracks, missing teeth, fraying, and fluid contamination can be examined by visual inspection, but even a component that looks impeccable still needs to be replaced at the mentioned Timing Belt mileage as well as the automatic tensioner and idler to maintain factory timing accuracy. The water pump on these cars is frequently driven by the Timing Belt also and thus many owners change the pump during the same job to prevent paying labor twice. The modern belt is less expensive than a metal chain, does not require lubricant and is quite silent when running as compared to the metal one, indicating why Mazda kept adopting it even in the new generations. Remaining in the recommended timetable keeps any Mazda engine lively and wallets not in need of huge internal repairs.

Mazda 626 Timing Belt Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing belt front cover on Mazda 626?
    A:
To take off the timing belt front cover first, makes sure that the spark plugs have been removed and then with a wrench, loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt until the timing mark in the crankshaft pulley lines up with the 0 degree BTDC mark on the indicator scale and the camshaft sprocket A mark lines up with the mark on the front housing. Then, extract the bolts and loosen the crankshaft pulley out of the timing belt sprocket with only one concern that the pulley cannot be completely removed out of the vehicle and has to be moved off of the sprocket. Notate the rotation direction with an arrow mark in the timing belt and then loosen the tension in case of reuse of the belt. Unscrew the tensioner lock bolt of the timing belt, loosen the belt on the sprockets and take it out of the engine. Examine the belt in case it is torn, peeling or worn, cracked, hardened, crimped or even in case it has oil or moisture and replace the belt in case any of the above conditions are present or in case of expiration of the required milage. To install, make sure the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket timing marks align and press on the tensioner to exert maximum pressure having the spring fitted and locking the lock bolt to keep the tensioner in position. Install the belt on the camshaft and crankshaft sprockers on the tension side and make sure that the arrow is in the correct direction in case of installing the old belt back on. To do this, loosen the tensioner lock bolt to allow only the spring to create tension, rotate the crankshaft twice to the right to create the same amount of tension on both sides of the timing belt and tighten the lock bolt again. Test the timing marks to be correctly aligned and test the deflection of the belt half way between the camshaft and crankshaft sprockers on the tension side to confirm that it is within specification and repeat the adjustment as needed. Lastly, place the timing belt cover.
