To replace the strut assembly, one should start by loosening the lug nuts in use on the front side and carefully lifting the vehicle to lift the front wheels. In the rear wheel drive, remove the caliper and disc then hold the strut with your hands and loosen the upper shock mount nuts, and detach the brake line attached to the strut. Take out the shock bolts and the shock and coil spring together. Install the strut assembly in a vise, squeeze the coil spring, and loosen the locknut with the shock piston rod. Critically unload the contents on the top of the shock absorber taking care not to omit the spring compressor. When reinstalling, set the piston rod nut and piston block mounting block nuts to specifications depending on the particular model. In 1988-89 models, the process of removing the adjustable shock absorbers is to be considered separately and the strut assembly must be placed accordingly. In the case of the RX-7, the front wheel, brake caliper, and rotor should be removed, and the strut should be stripped off the steering knuckle and lower arm, recording the orientation of their refitting. The overhaul processes include the dismantling of the strut, compression of the coil spring and inspection of the shock absorber functionality and then reassembling with consideration of the torque specification and right lubrication of the parts.
