In order to loosen the tie rod, it is important to loosen the tie rod clamp nuts in order to remove and install the tie rod. Then take out and dispose the cotter pin on the ball socket end followed by the nut. Perform the same steps with a ball joint puller, which is to loosen the ball socket stud on the
Center Link and remove the stud on the kingpin steering arm. Unscrew the tie rod end out of the threaded sleeve, recording the number of threads taken off, remember that the threads could be left or right hand threads. Installation: the threads should be lightly greased; then the new end should be turned in the same number of turns as it was turned out to install the ball socket studs in the center link and the kingpin steering arm, and attach the nuts by tightening them to 25 ft. lbs up to 1976 models, 32 ft. lbs up to 1977-86 models, and 43 ft. lbs up to 1987-89 models. Install new cotter pin, but make sure that the nut is tight to the cotter pin and not loose. Lastly, check and adjust the toe-in, and then tighten the tie rod clamps / jam nuts.
