The evaporative emission control system charcoal filter is placed in the top of the air cleaner housing and as such needs to be checked. Start by removing the top of the air cleaner case and unscrew the clips, then inspect the air cleaner element and clean it then check the
PCV Valve. It is placed under the hood in the engine compartment and is known as the evaporative canister, which is meant to retain the fuel vapors and avoid their emission to the atmosphere. When the engine is not running, in early models, evaporated fuel in the condenser tank is pumped back into the fuel tank as the ambient temperatures increase and the vapors condense (later models do not have a condenser tank). During the running process of the engine, uncondensed fuel vapor flows to the carbon canister where stored vapors are extracted by fresh air on the inlet hole and directed to the air cleaner to the combustion chamber. The canister maintenance is to be done periodically, according to the Maintenance Interval charts.
