In case of electrical work on any electrical portion of the vehicle, it is better to remove the negative (-) battery cable first so as to avoid possible damage to the delicate electrical equipment such as the Engine Control Module (ECM), radio and alternator. It is worthwhile to disconnect the negative cable first to prevent the accidental grounding of the positive (+) to the vehicle body that might damage such components. The ignition should be switched to the OFF position before removing the cables so that the battery does not draw any current and create arcing which may damage the components like alternator diodes. Once more plugging the battery cables, the negative cable being the last one to be connected, make sure that the lights and windshield wipers (electrically powered safety features) and so on are working well. In case the car has an Electronically Tuned Radio (ETR), also make sure to change the radio stations and the clock.
