To change the rear main seal of the 2.2L and 2.6L engines of 1989-93, disconnect the negative battery cable, lift and support the vehicle, and remove the transmission. In the case of manual transmission, the pressure plate, clutch disc and flywheel are to be removed; in automatic transmission, the drive plate that is part of the crankshaft has to be removed. Secondly, take out the rear oil pan-to-seal housing bolts then the rear main seal housing bolts and the seal housing. Remove the oil seal on the rear main housing, wipe off the gasket mounting surfaces and place a fresh seal with oil and apply it to the housing with a seal driver. Install new gaskets and sealant on the mounting surface of the oil pan, and tighten the rear seal housing to required values. On the 1987-88 2.6L engine the rear main seal is housed in the rear of the block and the transmission has to be removed and work done either underneath it or the engine must be pulled out. Unscrew the holding bolts, take the housing and the separator, peel off the old seal, clean the components, and pour a little oil on the new seal and tap it. Installation includes the separator with the oil hole facing downwards, interaction of the oil seal lips and the housing connection. In the case of the 3.0L engine, lift up and make the vehicle stable, disconnect the transmission, empty the engine oil, and remove the oil pan. Take the main seal cover and seal out at the rear, clean engine oil and install the new seal after which the seal cover is put back. In the 4.0L engine, in case the crankshaft rear oil seal is being replaced, one can do it in the vehicle, otherwise take the engine out and replace the rear main bearing. Take off the starter, transmission, among others the pressure plate, the clutch disc and the flywheel. Drill holes on the rear oil seal of the crankshaft, screw up, and peel out the seal. Wipe down the seal recess and crankshaft surface, apply oil to a new seal and fit it with a seal driver. Install the engine rear cover plate, install the flywheel, apply oil-resistant sealer over the threads of the bolts, install bolt threads and tighten them in that order. Lastly, one can install the clutch disc and pressure plate assembly followed by installing the transmission.
