Differential with an inch lbs. Utilize a torque wrench on the companion flange nut to read. To remove the companion flange, hold the companion flange to stop it from turning and remove the locknut and then use a puller. Using a center punch, you can damage the seal in order to pry it out. After this is done, apply sealer to the outer edge of the new seal. Drive the new seal in place using a seal driver. And make sure to coat the seat lip with clean gear oil. Before installation, apply chassis lube on the companion flange, install and tighten nut until previously noted rotational torque is achieved, and do not exceed 130 ft. lbs. Finally, reinstall the driveshaft and replace any lost gear oil. For the Navajo, disconnect the negative battery cable and safely elevate the vehicle so the axle drops for clearance. Detach the rear wheels and brake drums so they do not drag on the axle. Mark the companion flanges and U-joints for proper reinstallation, and then remove the driveshaft. Using an inch pound torque wrench, measure the torque on the pinion yoke nut to allow differential rotation. Record this measurement. Use a suitable tool for holding the companion flange and remove the pinion nut. Place the drain pan under the differential and clean around the seal. Mark the yoke-to-pinion relation. Using a 2-jawed puller and a small prybar for the seal, remove the companion flange. Make sure the oil seal bore is completely clean. Check that the installation depth is correct using the correct seal driver. Drive the new seal in while coating the seal lip with clean waterproof wheel bearing grease. To install the yoke, apply a little wheel bearing grease on the splines, and then align the matchmarks and hammer the yoke onto the pinion. Put in place a new nut on the pinion; hold the yoke with a holding tool and tighten the pinion nut while taking frequent turning torque readings until the original preload reading is attained; making an adjustment as necessary, do not back off the nut to reduce the preload. Using the matchmarks, reinstall the driveshaft, torque the nuts to 15 ft-lbs, lower the vehicle, and connect the negative battery cable.
