Mazda Millenia Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
How does the park/neutral safety switch function as the reverse light switch and what are the steps for its removal and installation on Mazda Millenia?
    A:
The reverse light switch doubles as the park/neutral safety switch. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Block the wheels, apply the parking brake and place the gear shift in Neutral to remove and install. To gain access, as required, remove the resonance chamber, fresh air duct and air cleaner assembly. Remove the spring pin and clip to disconnect the shift cable or rod at the transaxle and switch manual lever. Remove the nut, lock washer, and lever from the manual shaft, taking a matchmark on the shaft, manual lever and switch assembly as a precaution. Detach the Neutral safety switch connector after removing the switch and switch mounting bolts. To install the unit, turn the manual shaft to N. Align the Neutral mark on the switch to the flat, straight surfaces found on either side of the manual shaft. Loosely tighten the switch bolts then adjust the switch. Tighten bolts to 70-95 inch lbs. (8-11Nm) Fit the manual shaft nut, lockwasher, and lever and torque to 24-33 ft. lbs. Tighten the transaxle mounting bolts to the specified torque value which is 32-46 Nm. Then connect the Neutral safety switch electrical connector and the shift cable at the transaxle, installing the spring pin and clip. If removed, reinstall the resonance chamber, fresh air duct, and air cleaner assembly. Then reconnect the negative battery cable. When adjusting, place the transaxle selector lever in Neutral, loosen the switch mounting bolts and after the screw on the switch body is removed; move the switch until the screw hole aligns with the small hole in the switch. To check the alignment, insert a pin (0.079 in. or 2mm for all other models and 0.157 in. or 4mm for Millenia) and then tighten the mounting bolts and remove the pin. Attach the screw to the switch body and tighten it, checking the adjustment by trying to start the engine in all gears (it must only start in Park and Neutral).
