Mazda MPV Ignition Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the ignition lock cylinder and ignition switch on Mazda MPV?
    A:
De-connect the negative cable on the battery then take off the steering wheel and the steering column cover. In models 1989 to 1995, disconnect the electrical connector, and test the ignition switch with an ohmmeter in every position, to ensure that the switch continues in each position with the key. In case of faulty switch, withdraw the screw that holds the switch and remove the clips attached to the steering column, and install the same as the reverse of the process. In models starting in 1996, do not connect the cable to the negative battery post, disassemble the steering column and instrument panel covers (left and right side), and instrument panel covers (lower and left sides). Unscrew the ignition switch screw, unhook the wiring and unscrew the key reminder switch terminal of the ignition switch and install it in the reverse order. The lock cylinder assembly can be released by two shear-head bolts to the steering column; the bolts are unscrewed with a screwdriver then a slot is cut across the bolts part with a chisel and hammer, looseness is the trick; the clamp can then be removed out of the steering column. Install the new switch in position, clamps, and bolts, and tighten the bolts until the heads come of.
