How to disconnect the Center Console on Mazda MX-5 Miata?

Disconnect the negative battery cable. For 2005 and earlier models, unscrew the shift knob, lift out the ashtray and remove the screw beneath it, open the storage compartment and remove the screw(s) at the bottom, remove the screw at the lower front of the console on each side, lift the console up and unplug the electrical connectors, and then lift the console off the shift lever. For 2006 and later models, unscrew and remove the shift lever knob, remove the front and rear trim covers using a trim removal tool, remove the parking brake lever boot with a trim removal tool, remove the console retaining screws (two at the front, one in the bottom of the cup holder receptacle, and two at the rear), lift up the console and disconnect the electrical connectors from the power window main switch and the gear position indicator. Installation is the reverse of removal.
