The Mazda MX-6 Alternator keeps the sporty coupe's battery fully charged and provides a steady stream of electricity to the lights, ignition, and cabin devices when the engine is operating. This Mazda unit consists of two pieces made of aluminum with an attached stator ring and a rotor mounted on the shaft to be rotated by a belt attached to the crankshaft, such that engine movement causes the swirling of a magnetic field, which produces alternating current. The same small enclosure contains diodes that immediately transform that AC into the direct current all the circuit boards in the machine require, and heat sinks that maintain the diodes at cooler temperatures. Earlier first-generation Mazda models applied a conventional voltage regulator located externally to the unit to regulate field current and avoid overcharging, whereas subsequent MX-6 models folded that control into the Alternator housing or left it controlled by the powertrain control module, reducing the number of parts and increasing reliability. Depending on the year of production, there is a front bearing that holds the pulley and cooling fan and a rear bearing that holds the shaft adjacent to brushes that supply power to the field coils in the rotor.     To install the alternator, loosen the battery negative cable first then loosen the adjustment bolt. Disconnect the three plugs in the terminal and unconnect the wire harness to the clip and then unfasten the drivebelt. Then remove the through bolt and nut, and the alternator can be removed off the engine. Installation: To install, place the alternator and put the through bolt and nut in, and then adjusting bolt. Install the drivebelt and adjust the tension and connect the alternator connectors and reconnect the battery negative cable.
