Mazda MX-6 Starter

The Mazda MX-6 Starter provides the mechanical crank necessary to turn the crankshaft to trigger the engine of the coupe into action. It transforms electrical energy into rotation by spinning a small armature with a large thick cable fed by the 12-volt battery via an externally mounted solenoid. This Starter is based on accepted electromagnetic principles to spin. With the help of modern Mazda electronics, the response time remains fast. When the ignition key is switched to START, the solenoid pushes the pinion gear into the flywheel ring gear and, any time it is powered, the engine cranks until fuel combustion allows the engine to keep running, and an overrunning clutch then pulls the pinion back to prevent damage. There have been two primary electric designs in this sporty line, the original type of direct-drive where the armature makes one full rotation for every motor rotation, and a subsequent gear-reduction type where the torque is passed through a small reduction gear to increase the twisting force of the light package. This modification enhanced cold-start features and made more space in the engine bay without changing driving patterns. Safety switches connected to either the neutral position on the automatics or the clutch pedal on the manuals prevent accidental starting when the vehicle is in gear, which remain uniform over Mazda production years. With these improvements, any MX-6 can still enjoy the advantage of a Starter which balances ease with great mechanical advantage, and which makes Mazda ignition fast, safe, and reliable.

Mazda MX-6 Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What should you do if the starter motor does not turn when the switch is operated on Mazda MX-6?
    A:
When pressing the switch, the starter fails to start, be sure the shift lever is in Neutral or Park with the automatic transaxle or in Neutral with the manual transaxle. Ensure you charge the battery and makes sure that all battery and starter solenoid battery terminal cables are secure. When facing the case that the starter is not running and the solenoid clicks, with the battery fully charged, then the problem might be associated with the main solenoid contacts or the starter itself. In case the solenoid plunger cannot be heard when the switch is being triggered, then the solenoid is faulty, or the circuit may be open. The solenoid can be tested by connecting a jumper lead between the battery and the M on the solenoid, in the event that the starter activates then the solenoid is working correctly and the ignition switch, the neutral start switch, or the wiring is faulty. Should the starter failure still persist, then disassemble the starter/solenoid unit, testing and repairing it by a dealer or a well-equipped shop.
