Both approaches are based on common components including twin bearings, brush assemblies, heat-sinked diodes, and a rotor energized by field coils instead of permanent magnets and a balance between cost and high levels of low-rpm charging. The device is placed in either of the cases close to the front of the engine and can easily tap energy off the crankshaft belt, changed into electrical power to power headlights, fuel injectors, and the stereo among others. There is a clean Alternator frame that keeps the bay clean. Since Mazda tuned output to the electrical load of its sedan models, a change in the electrical regulator style necessitates corresponding matching of wiring harness and control strategy among each Mazda generation.
