    How to adjust the Neutral Safety Switch to ensure the engine starts only in Park or Neutral on Mazda Protege?
    A:
    The engine should only start in Park or Neutral. Apply the Park brake and block the rear wheels. Raise the vehicle front end on jackstands. Shift transaxle to Neutral to adjust Neutral Safety Switch. Take off the electrical connector leading to the switch and unscrew the mounting bolts. Make use of the ohmmeter and check for continuity across the switch terminals by rotating the switch until continuity occurs. Then, it shows the Neutral position. Next, no make the bolts tight. To replace, disconnect the negative battery cable. Shift the transaxle to Neutral. Remove the nut to lift off the shift lever. Unplug the electrical connector. Remove retaining bolts to remove the switch from the shift shaft. To install, allign the flats on the shift shaft with those in the switch, push the switch on the shaft, position on transaxle, and loosely tighten bolts. After reinstalling the shift lever and adjusting it, reconnect the negative battery cable and check the engine does not start unless the shift lever is in Park or Neutral.

    What is the function and replacement process of the Neutral Safety Switch on Mazda Protege?
    A:
    The Neutral Safety Switch is the sensor at the manual lever on the transaxle that provides information to the PCM and prevents engine start unless in Park or Neutral. It also turns on the backup lights in R. If the motor starts while in gear (not in Park or Neutral), the switch may need adjustment or replacement. First, disconnect the negative battery cable. Next, disconnect the electrical connector at the switch and test the switch's terminals with an ohmmeter. If the switch fails this test, replace it. To begin removal, take out the battery, battery tray and air cleaner box, then disconnect the electrical connector at the switch and the shift cable at the transaxle. Next, remove the nut from the manual shift arm and pry off the arm, then remove the bolts and the switch. Reinstallation is the reverse of removal and the switch will be adjusted to work properly. After the switch mounting bolts are hand-tightened, connect an ohmmeter across the A and H terminals and adjust the switch position for continuity. Finally, tighten the mounting bolts.
