Mazda Protege PCV Valve

The primary role of the Mazda Protege PCV Valve is to sweep unhealthy blow-by gases from the crankcase back through the cylinders into the engine and streamline emissions. The PCV Valve controls the intake manifold vacuum by throttling the flow when the engine is at idle (when the suction is great) and opens further when the throttle opens (when the vacuum decreases), therefore the engine never runs lean and no excess vapor accumulates in the crankcase. On Mazda four-cylinder engines this timing keeps the oil cleaner, retards the formation of sludge, and even allows piston rings to seal more effectively to give a minor increase in power. In the entire production cycle Mazda has installed a spring-loaded check design, which doubles as a flame arrester, preventing sudden intake backfires from striking the lower end of the motor. Subsequent model years use the same fundamental mechanism but incorporate an inbuilt breather or factory oil separator which removes stray oil mist prior to gases returning to combustion, a feature that prolongs the life of catalytic converters and keeps the induction tract clean. Since the component is cheap and often has no service requirements, Mazda owners only need to periodically check that the component has not become stuck or clogged as a jammed PCV Valve may cause rough idle, oil spills or excessive smoke. This small component helps every gasoline Protege maintain a balance between performance, durability and environmental responsibility.

Mazda Protege PCV Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and check the PCV Valve and PCV Valve Hose in the valve cover on Mazda Protege?
    A:
The hose and PCV valve are found in the valve cover. To take out the PCV valve, take the hose and pull it out of the cover. When the engine is idling and at normal operating temperature, put your finger over the end of the valve and in case there is no vacuum, inspect and change any plugged or worn valves. When the engine is switched off, cut the PCV valve off the hose, attach a clean hose, and blow through the valve on the valve cover end. In case air does not move this way, change the valve. When buying a replacement, make sure that it fits your particular vehicle and engine size and compare the old and the new valve to make sure they are identical.
