Mazda Protege Starter

The Mazda Protege Starter receives battery power and immediately transforms it into spinning power that awakens the engine, and the drivers take off by simply twisting a key. It achieves this by conducting current using a heavy cable to an external solenoid, which then supplies power to an internal armature within the Starter housing; the armature is then enclosed by coiled field coils or permanent magnets, whirling the armature and the connected drive gear by electromagnetic force. This same solenoid forces that gear into the teeth of the flywheel, and an overrunning clutch draws it back as soon as the engine starts to eliminate grinding. The early Protege models had a direct drive design wherein the armature is rotated at the same frequency as the crankshaft, but more modern Mazda models have a compact gear reduction design in which a small reduction gear is fitted between the armature and the drive shaft, enabling the motor to run at a faster speed with increased torque and reduced weight. The two layouts are connected to a control circuit, which begins at the ignition switch and incorporates a relay, as well as a neutral or clutch safety switch, which will not allow the Starter to be engaged unless the transmission is in park, the transmission is in neutral, or the clutch is released. Mazda owners enjoy a steady Starter in any weather, keeping the old reliability of their Mazda alive each morning, and the classy style brings a smile to each departure.

Mazda Protege Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the starter/solenoid assembly if it fails on Mazda Protege?
    A:
The starter/solenoid assembly is not repairable with individual parts, failure requires replacement with a new one or a re-assembled one. The first thing to do is to remove the cable of the negative side of the battery. In 1994 and earlier models, the battery is to be removed in the engine compartment. In models between 1995 and 1998, do not have the air cleaner assembly. Lift the car and place it on jack stands. In the case of the same models, disconnect the exhaust pipe with the exhaust manifold and remove the catalytic converter. The second step is to remove the starter bracket and intake manifold bracket on the starter. Disassemble the electrical connector of the solenoid and the nut and unattach the battery cable of the starter. Then de-mount the starter mounting bolts followed by the starter. Removal is the opposite of installation.
  • Q: What is the primary function of the starter system and what components does it include on Mazda Protege?
    A:
The main components in the starter are to ensure that the engine starts quickly and are comprised of the battery, starter motor, starter solenoid, and the electrical circuit connecting the two with the solenoid being attached to the motor itself. This is a trio of parts on the upper section of the engine, which is next to the transaxle bell housing. By rotating the ignition key to the START position, the starter solenoid is operated with the help of the starter control circuit, which connects the battery to the starter, which delivers the electrical energy required to crank the engine. In vehicles equipped with a manual transaxle the starter motor only starts when the clutch pedal is depressed and in vehicles with an automatic transaxle only when the selection lever is in Park or Neutral. Cautions are not cranking the starter motor excessively to risk overheating and breaking it, not mishandling of the starter so as to arc or ignite a fire, and to never leave the cable unconnected with the negative battery terminal before carrying out any work on the starter.
