Mazda Tribute Ignition Switch

Mazda Tribute Ignition Switch is the vehicle master gatekeeper, which sends the signal that activates the engine and all other electrical parts once the driver turns the key or presses the starter button. Contact points inside the small housing complete a circuit the moment the appropriate key blade or transponder code is inserted into the lock, connecting battery power to the starter solenoid, fuel delivery components, and other parts like windows and audio to activate the crossover. The initial years of production applied a simple traditional keyed cylinder, which meant that a metal key unlocked the steering column and turned a switch plate that brought the voltage in the proper sequence. Subsequent years of the model changed to the use of a push button style with an electronic immobiliser, which removes the option of twisting metal but verifies the presence of a coded chip before current is discharged. Both models are similar in the use of a plug-and-play design that is customized to Mazda wiring to allow owners to change the Ignition Switch without sophisticated programming. This convenience is evident in the expanded Mazda crossover range. The primary distinction lies in the way the driver gets the circuit started, a physical rotation as opposed to a finger tap that the computer is tracking. Hotwiring to break one or the other of the styles aims at the same switch wires, which explains the need for the component to be within a shielded column shroud. Maintaining the Ignition Switch in great condition will guarantee fast startups, full batteries, and reliable safety locks to all Mazda rides, even the always reliable Tribute.

Mazda Tribute Ignition Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove the ignition lock cylinder and ignition switch on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
Cars that are fitted with the Passive Anti-Theft Systems (PATS), or the FordSecurilock system, cannot have the lock cylinder removed unless the anti-theft transceiver is removed. To change the battery of the pre-2006 model, the first step is to disconnect the negative battery terminal and put the ignition key to the on position and then release the lock cylinder by an awl or a punch of 1/8 inch. A lock cylinder is then fitted with exact alignments and the battery is re-connected back that enables the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to re-learn its idle and fuel trim strategy. In 2007 and subsequent models, this is done by removing the steering column covers, unlocking the tabs at the anti-theft module and inserting a thin rod to push the release pin outward, then pulling the key out. The ignition switch and tumbler type requires to disconnect the negative battery terminal and steering column covers, and disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector and then lowers the steering column and pulls out the ignition switch. The transceiver used to transmit important information to the BCM and PCM is the anti-theft transceiver that is also a small component hence must be handled carefully when removing and installing. The push button start system substitutes the old ignition system, whereby the voltage of the battery is used to indicate multiple modules to operate the engine and other interior systems and requires a programmed proximity key to switch the ignition on or off. When the push button starting system experiences problems, it can be recommended to have them assisted by a qualified repair facility or local Ford dealership.
