Mazda Tribute Neutral Safety Switch

The Mazda Tribute Neutral Safety Switch is an electronic device that allows the engine to crank only when the transmission selector is in Park or Neutral. This part is also known as a Neutral Safety Switch and is mounted on the selector mechanism. The component is part of the network of sensors in the Mazda automatic transmission that communicates with the powertrain control computer. A gear position signal is generated in the switch by contacts moving with the shift lever. The starter motor is enabled when the contacts recognize Park or Neutral. If any other drive position is detected, the cranking circuit remains open and cranking is disabled to avoid movement. The same signal is applied by the computer to select solenoids for engaging the gears and directs line pressure, shift timing, and operation of the torque-converter clutch. Contamination or excessive wear can disrupt the signal due to the device's reliance on the precise alignment of contacts, leading to a no-start condition or incorrect gear indication. The switch is on low voltage circuitry integrated with the transmission harness and its status can be read via Tribute onboard diagnostics. Every Mazda ignition sequence depends on a Neutral Safety Switch that is working correctly, and the switch's gear data helps with cruise control cancel and overdrive disable. The Neutral Safety Switch helps with drivability and safety through these functions. Mazda's ingenious design engages the switch with the Tribute transmission mechanism to ensure a reliable relationship between actual gear movement and computed logic.

Mazda Tribute Neutral Safety Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q:
What steps are involved in its adjustment and installation Neutral Safety Switch on Mazda Tribute?
    A:
This procedure only applies to V6 models from 2008 and earlier, as the Neutral Safety Switch on 2009-on models is inside the transaxle valve body, and should be done by a qualified technician or repair facility. In order to perform this procedure, a special tool (manufacturer tool no. 307-351 or equivalent) is required. Failure to use this tool will result in the switch not being adjusted correctly, resulting in trouble codes and driveability issues. If the special tool is not available, you should have the procedure performed by a dealer service department or other qualified repair shop. To begin, set the parking brake and place the shift lever in Neutral. Take out the battery and battery tray, and then you will have to remove the air filter housing and air intake duct. Drain the engine coolant and take off the thermostat housing. The Neutral Safety Switch can be disconnected by removing the electrical connector; remove the mounting bolts and unscrew the switch. To install the switch, install the special tool on the switch, ensuring that the prongs engage with the notches in the rotating ring. Put the switch onto the transaxle and rotate the ring on the switch so that projections align with slots on the shaft. Once the switch mounting bolts are installed and tightened, remove the special tool and reconnect the connector. The rest of the installation is done in reverse order. Upon battery reconnection and a system coolant refill, the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) needs to relearn idle and fuel trim strategy for maximum driveability and performance.
