Disconnect the cable of the negative of the battery and drain the cooling system. Stress on the water pump pulley bolts by loosening them is recommended prior to removing the drivebelt to help in removal of the pulleys. In the case of four-cylinder models, lose the lug nuts of the right front wheel, lift the car and place it on jackstands. Take out the right front wheel, the fender splash shield and the water pump pulley. To do this on 2.0L, 2.3L, and 2.5L, loosen the bolts that hold the water pump on the engine block and disassemble the pump, tapping it lightly with a soft-faced hammer in case it is stuck, and having a drain pan underneath to receive any of the leaked coolant. Wipe out the bolt threads and threaded holes in the engine and strip away all corrosion and sealant and all old gasket material. On 1.5L and 1.6L models, take out the cowl panel and air filter outlet piping, turbocharger inlet pipe, then take off the timing-belt and tensioner, and then remove the water pump mounting bolts. On V6 models, on 2008 and earlier models, take out the air filter housing and intake pipe, and this time a special puller can be required to get the water pump pulley out. When working on a late build (2006) to 2008, take off the water pump pulley and in 2004 and earlier, take off the water pump drivebelt tensioner. Uncouple any hoses to the water pump, take off the mounting bolts and clean up all the gasket and O-rings. Modifications In 2009-2012 models, eliminate the outlet air duct in air filter housing, the water pump drivebelt, and the lower radiator hose in the thermostat housing and eliminate the three mounting bolts to separate water pump and housing, removing the old gasket and cleaning the sealing surfaces. Compare new pump with previous pump and make sure that they are the same, apply a thin coating of RTV sealant to keep the new gasket in position and make sure that the gasket is firmly seated on the water pump with clean mating surfaces. Install Bolts and screws of water pump and screw it to the required torque then undo the steps of installation to reinstall. Refill the cooling system and reattach the battery so that the Powertrain Control Module can relearn its idle and fuel trim strategy to achieve optimal performance. Lastly run the engine and monitor leakages.
