Replacement of thermostat and thermostat housing is in the form of an assembly on the 1.5L, 1.6L, 2.3L, 2.5L, and 2013 and subsequent 2.0L models with thermostats. Start by unplugging the cable of the negative battery terminal and emptying out the cooling system, and keep the coolant in a good condition. On 2004 and earlier 4 cylinder, V6 models, find the thermostat by tracing the lower radiator hose to the engine, remove the hose clamp, and take off the hose. The cover of the thermostat housing is supposed to be changed in case of corrosion. Take the mounting bolts of the thermostat cover and remove the cover, making sure to be ready to get coolant spillage. Record the thermostat orientation and take the thermostat off. On 2005 and later 2.0L, 2.3L, 2.5L and 3.0L, protect the alternator against coolant spillage and on 2.3L engines drivebel as well as air intake tube on 2008 and earlier V6 3.0L models. Unscrew heater hose and the radiator hose with the thermostat housing, unscrew the bolts on the housing cover and the thermostat. On 1.5L, take off the drivebelt, the
A/C Compressor and then the alternator. In 1.6L models, go through the procedure of removing the thermostat housing, removing radiator and heater hoses. Wipe out all old gasket material on the housing and cover, place in new rubber gasket, and make sure that the thermostat is fitted in with the jiggle valve at 12 o'clock. Install the thermostat housing/cover and screw the bolts in place, reconnect the radiator hoses and ensure the clamps are tightened. Add coolant, reattach the battery and leave the Powertrain Control Module to remake its idle and fuel trim program. Turn on the engine and allow it to attain normal operating temperature and ensure that there is no leakage or malfunctioning of the thermostat.
