1985 Mazda RX-7 Bumper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and install the rear bumper and shock absorber on 1985 Mazda RX-7?
A: Open the rear glass hatch and peel back the floor covering at the rear of the luggage compartment. On each side of the floor, there are service holes covered by plates; remove the two securing screws and lift off the covers. Access the lock nut and jam nut of the shock absorber piston inside the service holes. Raise the rear end of the vehicle and support it firmly with stands for the remaining procedures. Under the bottom lip of the bumper, locate the shock absorber mounting brackets and attaching nuts, marking around these brackets on the body panel. Remove the four nuts (two on each side bracket) while supporting the bumper assembly, then lift the bumper assembly away from the car. Inspect the shock absorber and measure the length of the spring, which should be approximately 2.50 in (64 mm); if not, replace the shock absorber with a new one. To install the rear bumper, lift it into position and loosely install the four securing nuts. Adjust the bumper to align with the identification marks made during disassembly, then tighten the four nuts. Tighten the lock nuts and jam nuts inside the vehicle and install the access hole covers, followed by placing the floor covering back in its original position.
