1991 Mazda MX-6 Oil Pump Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to disassemble and reassemble the oil pump on 1991 Mazda MX-6?
A: In order to break down the pump, firstly, loosen the retaining screws and cover on the backside. Then remove the gears in the body of the pump, and this can be done by inverting the body so that the gears would fall off. Clamp the pump body in a soft jawed vise and move on to take out the oil pressure sending unit, plug, pressure regulator valve, plunger and spring. To inspect, clean the parts of the oil pump with solvent and examine all parts of the parts against wear or cracks or any damage. Measurings: Outer (idler) gear-to-body, inner (drive) gear-to-body, outer gear-to-pump body, and gear-to-cover. The first step during reassembly is to install the valve, spring assembly, and plunger. Put thread locking compound on the threads of the plug and tighten to the required torque. Install the gears, with the identifying mark of the outer gear facing up to the cover, and then the pump cover should be attached and the screws firmly tightened. Lastly, fit oil pressure sending unit.
