1992 Mazda MPV Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to replace the rear crankshaft seal without removing the oil pan or seal retainer in Four-cylinder engine on 1992 Mazda MPV?
A: This procedure requires the removal of the transmission of the vehicle. Start by taking off the flywheel/driveplate. The seal is not fixed to the seal retainer or the oil pan. With a screwdriver and rag, very carefully peel the seal out of the housing, being very careful not to nick or scratch the crankshaft, which would destroy the new seal and result in leakage. The rag is going to prevent any cracks on the crankshaft seal surface. Rub some clean oil on the crankshaft seal journal and the lip of the new seal, and tap the new seal into place. The seal lip being hard, a lubricant spread over the journal and the seal lip with multipurpose grease will help the process; rub the seal along the journal using something smooth and blunt. Stamp the seal into the retainer with a seal driver, or in its absence, a large socket or section of pipe of an outside diameter somewhat less than that of the seal. Be careful not to hurry with this procedure as this may result in breaking the seal. The other processes entailed are the reversal of the erasing process. Lastly, test the engine and observe the leakage of oil.
