Before the new seal and retainer assembly can be attached to the block
Crankshaft has to be installed and the main bearing caps have to be bolted into place. Start with removing the old seal using the hammer and punch pushing it out of the backside with the assistance of the wood block under the retainer. Note the recession distance into the retainer bore of the old seal, the new seal has to also be recessed by the same distance; the bore should not be scratched or damaged to allow oil to leak out. Make sure that the retainer is clean and then somewhat coat the outer rim of the new seal with engine oil. Stamp the seal firmly into the retainer bore without hammering on it directly, and where there is no press clamp the retainer and seal between two smooth pieces of wood and press the seal into place using a large vise. Or put the retainer on a work-bench and pound out the seal with a block of wood and a hammer, taking care that the wood is sufficiently thick that its force is evenly dispersed around the edge of the seal. When fitting a four-cylinder engine apply a run of RTV sealant to the seal retainer groove, on a V6 engine, fit a new gasket. Prior to the mounting of the seal retainer to the crankshaft, wipe off the seal lips with multipurpose grease or engine oil. Gradually screw up the retainer bolts to the recommended torque, and in the case of a V6 engine, file the gasket off, but avoid scratching the gasket of the gasket surface of the oil pan.
