1992 Mazda MPV Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What is the primary function of the starter system and how does it operate on 1992 Mazda MPV?
A: The major purpose of the Starter is to rotate the engine to a speed sufficient to initiate the engine, which consists of the battery, the starter motor and the starter solenoid, and connecting wires, with the solenoid mounted on the starter motor. V6 engines have direct drive type starter/solenoid assembly and four-cylinder engines have a gear reduction one. The starter/solenoid motor assembly has to be mounted on the lower section of the engine, right next to the transmission bellhousing. Once the ignition switch is placed on the Start position, the starter solenoid is switched by the starter control circuit which ties the battery to the starter which supplies the electrical energy needed to crank the engine. In other vehicles with a manual transmission, a starter motor is only turned on once the clutch pedal is pushed whereas in other vehicles with an automatic transmission the starter motor is only turned on when the transmission selection lever is in the Park or Neutral position. Measures would also involve not cranking the starter too hard, thus overheating it and breaking it, not dropping the starter when handling it, and never leaving the cable still connected to the negative battery terminal when working on it.
