1997 Mazda MPV Valve Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to remove and install valve covers for V6 engine on 1997 Mazda MPV?
A: In order to open the valve covers, release the pressure in the fuel system, and unscrew the negative battery cable. To access the right cover, unbolt the fuel pressure regulator off of the valve cover and put it aside, unscrew the spark plug wires and label them with numbered tape so that they do not get mixed up when reinstalling. Displacement of the required electrical connectors and vacuum hoses, labeling and relocating them. Undo the valve cover bolts and washers, unscrew the cover; where the cover is tight you may easily bump one end with a piece of wood and a hammer or putty knife into a flexible form, breaking the gasket rubber in a way that does not harm the sealing surfaces. In the case of left cover, unattach the breather hose and follow the same procedure of removing the masking tape and the spark plug wire. The second step is to take out the throttle body and unplug the intake air pipe to avoid the spill. Slip the coolant lines out of the top of the valve cover then loosen the bolts and washers of the valve cover then loosen the cover using caution as to whether it is attached. To install, the mating surfaces of both the cylinder head and valve cover must be clean and a gasket scraper and a solvent should be used to wipe off old gasket material or sealant. Wipe off the threads of the mounting bolt and the threaded holes in the head where necessary. Install the gasket within the cover with the RTV sealant in which case, the sealant should be allowed to dry then the cover positioned carefully over the head followed by the installation of the bolts. The bolts are tightened in three or four steps to the required torque, then reverse the order of tightening of the bolts when taking them out. Once installed, the next step is to check the amount of coolant in the system and add more as necessary followed by turning the engine on and checking the engine to see whether there are leaks of oil.
