The first thing to do to take off the valve cover is to disconnect the cable at the negative battery terminal. Removal of air cleaner inlet hose and housing assembly of throttle body and the top of valve cover Next remove the air cleaner inlet hose and housing assembly on throttle body and valve cover top. Disconnect the distributor cap and wires, but remember to label each wire in place of proper installation. Mark and remove any hoses or wires to the throttle body or valve cover that could be in the way of the removal process. Unscrew the throttle body and the accelerator cable and disconnect it. Wipe the valve cover well to make sure there is no debris on the bare cylinder head or camshaft/valve train assembly and then remove the valve cover bolts. Gently remove the valve cover and Gasket, gently hammering the gasket off the cylinder head with a rubber mallet, do not pry as this will lead to damage of the gasket mating surfaces. Installation requires removing all traces of the old gasket substance on the mating surfaces of the cylinder head and valve cover with a gasket scraper, wiping the surfaces with a rag wetted in lacquer thinner or acetone. Install the semicircular cover seal on the cylinder head at the top of each of the two ends of the camshaft with beads of RTV sealant where the seal contacted the mating surface of the valve cover. Install a new gasket on the top of the valve cover by forcing it into the slot that surrounds the perimeter, and add the RTV sealant at the point of contact between the perimeter and the cylinder head and cap of the camshaft. The RTV should be given some time to harden to approximately five minutes and then apply the cover and bolts and tighten them to the required torque. The rest of the installation processes occur in an opposite sequence of the demolition.
