1997 Mazda MPV Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal and ensure proper installation in Four-cylinder engine on 1997 Mazda MPV?
A: Take off the drivebelts and then the crankshaft pulley. Using a timing chain seal removal tool or a screw driver pry the seal out of the timing chain cover without scratching the seal bore or damaging the crankshaft because this would cause leakage when using the new seal. Wipe off the timing chain cover bore and rub the outer part of the new seal with engine oil or multipurpose grease. A seal is easily pressed into place with a hammer using a socket with an outside diameter just less than the seal; in the event of the absence of a socket, a short length of a pipe of a large diameter may be employed. Seal After installation, inspect the seal to make sure that the spring did not pop out. Apply engine oil or multipurpose grease to the sleeve of the crankshaft pulley and then screw in the crankshaft pulley turning the procedure in the opposite direction. Lastly, start the engine and test leakages.
