2006 Mazda 6 Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A
Q: How to install a rear Crankshaft Seal for four cylinder engine on 2006 Mazda 6?
A: The rear main oil seal is introduced as one component and pressing into the rear main oil seal carrier which is located at the back of the block. One should start by taking off the transaxle and the flywheel/driveplate and then the oil pan. The oil seal and carrier are then unbolted followed by cleaning the mating surface of the oil seal carrier on the cylinder block and crankshaft but taking care not to leave any burrs or raised edges on the crankshaft which could have caused the seal to leak. On the inner lip of the new seal lightly apply clean engine oil and a thin and strong two-inch wide plastic strip or a beer bottle that has been cut in two is used around the inside of the circumference of the seal to serve as a liner to be installed. Holding the plastic seal liner or tool in position, slide the new carrier (with seal attached in factory) into place by sliding it upon the surface of the crankshaft. Install the carrier bolts and finger tighten them when the carrier is in place by ensuring that the bottom of the carrier matches the bottom edge of the engine block so that it fits into the engine block perfectly before tightening the carrier mounting bolts since it can cause the oil pan leak. Cautiously take off the plastic liner or tool so that the new seal can be brought into contact with the crankshaft mating surface in the correct manner and the oil seal carrier should then be likewise tightened in the correct order to the correct torque. The rest of the installation is in the opposite sequence of installation.
