What does the fuel pump module consist of and how is it replaced on Mazda 3?

The fuel pump module comprises of the fuel pump, fuel level sending unit, fuel filter and, in mechanical returnless pumps, a fuel pressure regulator, and electronic returnless pumps lack a regulator since fuel pressure is controlled by a Fuel Pump Control Module (FPCM). The components are not independently serviceable and have to be replaced as a unit. This can start by first removing the cable on the negative battery terminal and releasing the pressure of the fuel system. The second step is to take out the rear seat cushion, fuel pump access cover screws followed by disconnection of the fuel pump module electrical connector. Then disconnect and detach the fuel supply line quick-connect fitting to the fuel pump and then remove the fuel tank. To access the fuel pump module of a vehicle that has been regulated by the California emission regulation, we must first hammer and brass punch the lock ring of the fuel pump module counterclockwise, whereas in 2009 and non-California emission regulated vehicles, unscrew the fuel pump module retaining ring counterclockwise. In 2010 and onward, you need to eliminate the fasteners that hold the fuel pump module lock ring. Pull the fuel pump module very carefully out of the tank, tilting it as much as needed to avoid hitting the fuel level sensor float arm, and examine the O-ring, replacing it in case of evidence of deterioration. Installation is in the opposite sequence of removal.
