Oil pump is serviced as a whole system without any sub-assembling or internal inspection. The first step is to empty the engine oil and remove the engine filter. The timing chain cover, oil pan, and the oil pick-up tube, are then removed. The engine was also opened by removing the end of the oil pump drive chain tensioner spring using a screwdriver under the shouldered bolt followed by the removal of the two bolts and tensioner. The chain is detached, the oil pump drive sprocket is held by any appropriate tool in order to take out the sprocket bolt then the sprocket. Then unscrew the mounting bolts of the oil pump and extract the pump. To install, undo the removal procedure, but be sure to replace all the gaskets with new ones, tighten the mounting bolts of the oil pump to the required torque, replace an oil filter after the oil pan has been installed, and fill the crankcase with oil. Lastly, observe oil warning lights in the instrument panel after starting the car and letting the car idle.

The Mazda 3 Oil Pump maintains the components of the engine under pressurized lubrication so the four-cylinder engine core of the hatch or sedan can rotate without overheating or grinding. Placed close to the crankshaft, it consists of a compact assembly of interlocking gears, springs, and gaskets to remove oil from the sump, force it through the filter and cooler, and into the bearings, pistons, and the camshaft, where flowing oil is also applied as hydraulic fluid by small actuators. Direct drive models revolve around the crankshaft and connect directly to its nose, and gear-drive and chain-drive models are mounted on the side and use spur gears or a sprocket chain to provide power, thus allowing later Mazda 3 models to package in parts. Older original Mazda installations were occasionally of a crankcase-mounted design which featured a separate driveshaft that was necessarily well-squared at both hex ends to prevent slip.
