Mazda 3 Sway Bars
Mazda 3 Sway Bars minimize body roll by connecting the left and right suspension in such a way that the car becomes flatter in turns and is more stable. The bar is a solid or tubular metal rod which turns when one of the wheels is lifted in relation to the other and the difficulty of the bar to turn restricts chassis lean. The Sway Bars attach to the control arms at each end with end links, and are attached to the subframe (but not fixed) in midspan with bushings. Overuse of these bushings or link ball joints may lead to clunking sounds, more body roll and loss of handling. In Mazda cars the factory bar diameter is a trade-off between ride and handling, whereas a heavier bar increases roll stiffness to give a more responsive car. Other Sway Bars have several holes in the attachment or splined ends to allow the position of links to be changed, and some adjustable links have spherical bearings to allow rigidity with low friction. Periodic visual inspections of the suspension can identify broken or worn rubber bushings, stretched link holes, or slackness in ball joint type links that can produce clunks and lack control. Worn bushings or links can be replaced to regain sway bar capacity to counter excessive roll without adversely affecting ride quality. Maintaining the bar, links and bushings in good condition will assist the vehicle to be predictable when it is in emergency maneuvering. Clunking sounds are commonly observed when bushings are broken because the Mazda 3 drivers experience a lack of control in rolling. - Q:How to replace the front sway bars and front sway bar bushing on Mazda 3?A:Unscrew the lug nuts in the front wheel and lift the front of the automobile in place with jackstands. Turn on the parking brake and place something in the rear wheels to prevent rolling. Take out the front tires and splash covers. Removal of steering shaft joint cover and disconnection of steering shaft with the steering gear need to be done with the help of an Allen wrench, to retain ballstud in case the nut rotates with it. Looseen the tie-rod ends of the Steering Knuckles. Place the crossmember on the floor with a support, loosen the lower mounting fasteners and upper mounting bolts, and raise the crossmember about 3-1/2 inches and place it on the jackstands on each side. Unscrew the Sway Bars bushing clamps and take the Sway Bars out of the crossmember. When the Sway Bars are not on, remove the retainer bushings and examine them, looking at them as to cracking, wear, or deterioration, replacing them when necessary. Wipe off the rust or dirt in the bushing zone of the Sway Bars using a hard wire brush. Coat the internal and external surfaces of new bushing with vegetable oil to make it easier to put back together, but not with petroleum or mineral lubricants or brake fluid, which may cause the bushing to wear. The cuts of the bushings should be towards the back of the car. Installation is in the reverse sequence of removal attaching the fasteners to the required torque values.
