Mazda 323 Ball Joint

The Mazda 323 Ball Joint allows the suspension to pivot during steering with the tires firmly attached to irregular pavement. It works like a ball and socket, whereby a steel stud attached to the steering knuckle swivels in a greased housing attached to the control arm, and a rubber boot keeps out grit and, in so doing, retains grease. The Ball Joint allows the vertical movement of the arm and a horizontal sweep of the spindle simultaneously; therefore, it is able to combine bump absorption and directional change, which bushings alone cannot manage. There are two primary positions on this small Mazda, upper and lower, and they are either weight bearing loaded joints or lighter follower joints depending on the design type having a front wheel drive MacPherson strut or a short long arm design. The mass of the car is taken by loaded lower joints, which have wear indicators that, on popping out, indicate when the service threshold is exceeded, but unloaded ones are applied to just steer the alignment. Ball Joints are generally lifetime sealed and current Mazda designs prefer tight dust boots and better bearings, which extend service to around the eighty thousand mile mark. Once the boot bursts and contaminants get into it, drivers can hear clunks, experience steering pull, or observe uneven tires. The old Ball Joint would affect safety; hence, prompt replacement would restore sharp handling, and tire rubber would be maintained, which would ensure the enthusiastic feel that a young Mazda 323 should deliver.

Mazda 323 Ball Joint Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to properly remove and install a ball joint on Mazda 323?
    A:
Unscrew the lug nuts of the wheel, lift up the vehicle, and place it on jackstands to make it steady and afterwards withdraw the wheel. The next step is to remove the pinch bolt and nut which attach the Steering Knuckle to the lower ball joint, followed by prying out the Control Arm ball joint of the steering knuckle. Take the bolt and nuts that hold the ball joint in place on the control arm and loosen the ball joint using a pry bar. To install, hold the ball joint threaded stud by inserting it through the hole on the lower A-arm and installing the nut without tightening. Next, fit the ball joint mounting bolt and nut and screw them in to the required torque. Install the ball joint all the way in the steering knuckle, add the pinch bolt and nut and tighten the parts to the required torque. Lastly, fit the wheel and the lug nuts, bring the vehicle down and screw the lug nuts to the required torque.
