Mazda 323 Brake Hose Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How often should you inspect the Brake Hose connecting the steel brake lines to the brake assemblies on Mazda 323?
    A:
Every six months or so, when the vehicle is elevated and the jackstands properly set to hold the vehicle in position, examine the rubber hoses that attach the steel brake lines to the front and rear brake assemblies by cracks, chafing, leaks, blisters and other damages since they are essential parts of the brake system. A thorough check can be performed with the help of a light and a mirror and a damaged hose should be replaced with a new one. To change the front brake hose, it is important to loosen the lug nuts of the wheel, lift the car, and take out the wheel. Unscrew the brake line fitting on the hose with a flare-nut wrench to prevent the corners being rounded off, and leave the hose fitting in an open-end wrench. Use pliers to remove the U-clip out of the female fitting in the bracket and insert the hose through the bracket. At the caliper end, unsolder the banjo fitting bolt and part the hose off the caliper after being careful to store the two copper sealing washers and install them in the same order. Fit the new hose, by pushing the caliper fitting end through any bracket required, fit it to the caliper with the banjo bolt and new sealing washers making sure the locating lug is seated in the caliper hole and then tighten. Insert the hose support into the strut bracket and secure U-clip making sure that the hose is not twisted. Installation: Insert the hose into the frame bracket, and then attach the brake line fitting manually, attach the U-clip and then screw the fitting firmly. Then, bleed the caliper, fit the lug nuts and wheel and lower the vehicle and secure the lug nuts to the required torque. The rear brake hose joins two hard metal lines, one on the body and one on the suspension, each end fitted with threaded fittings and U-clips and these are in the same way joined up as the hose itself and then the Wheel Cylinder should be bled afterwards. When it comes to replacement of metal brake lines, one must use the right parts that are not comprised of copper and buy steel brake lines at an auto parts store or dealer. Ready-made brake lines, which have flared terminals at the tube ends and attached fittings can be used and must be firmly held in brackets without any interference with moving or hot parts. Once installed, master cylinder fluid level is checked, fluid added where needed, and the brake system bled off, and the brakes are tested before driving in traffic.
