Mazda 6 A/C Compressor

The Mazda 6 A/C Compressor cools the cabin by pressurizing and circulating refrigerant to enable the cabin to remain cool during hot days. It pulls in low-pressure gas from the inlet, forces it into a high-pressure high-temperature condition and then forces the hot gas to the condenser where heat is dumped. The refrigerant, after being cooled, passes to the evaporator, changes back to a gas and the blower passes chilled air through the vents before returning into a loop that recurs every second the system functions. Mazda equipped its midsize car with compressors across the years of production that could support one of two main refrigerant families, the earlier R12 compressor types that were found in early nineties vehicles and the newer R134a compressor types that are applied in current fleets. R12 compressors use mineral oil, and R134a models use synthetic PAG oil, hence cross-contamination with different kinds of oil and refrigerant may damage seals and bearings. The new Mazda 6 models were well calibrated to R134a at the factory, thereby saving their owners the trouble of doing the conversions. If the A/C Compressor is in good condition, it will keep the cabin temperature constant, but once the compressor clutch slips or the internal valves score, cooling becomes ineffective within a short period of time. To maintain the Mazda climate control, the A/C Compressor is required to be healthy to create the right amount of pressure.

Mazda 6 A/C Compressor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when replacing an A/C Compressor in an air conditioning system on Mazda 6?
    A:
If the compressor is being replaced due to failure, the rest of the system should be flushed by a technician to remove particles or contaminants. Removal: Have the air conditioning system discharged by an automotive air conditioning technician. Loosen the right front wheel lug nuts. Raise the vehicle and secure it on jackstands. Remove the right front wheel. Remove the right front fender splash shield and the splash shield under the radiator. Remove the drivebelt. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor clutch field coil. On 3.0L V engines, remove the front catalytic converter. Disconnect the compressor inlet and outlet line manifold from the compressor. Remove and discard the old O-rings. Remove the compressor mounting bolts and remove the compressor. Installation: If a new compressor is being installed, follow the directions that came with the compressor regarding the draining of excess oil prior to installation. The clutch may have to be transferred from the original to the new compressor. Before reconnecting the inlet and outlet lines to the compressor, replace all manifold O-rings and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Installation is otherwise the reverse of removal. Have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
