If the engine is overheating and the cooling fan is not coming on when the engine temperature rises to an excessive level, check the fan relays in the under-hood fuse/relay box. If the relays are okay, check all wiring and connections to the fan motor using the wiring diagrams at the end. If no obvious problems are found, the issue could be the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor, the fan control module (for 3.0L engines), or the Powertrain Control Control Module (PCM). It is advisable to have the cooling fan system and circuit diagnosed by a dealer service department or repair shop with the proper diagnostic equipment. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, then disconnect the fan motor electrical connector(s). Detach the wire harness clips from the fan shroud and move the harness away from the shroud. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. Remove the lower splash shield under the
Radiator, drain the cooling system; if the coolant is relatively new and still in good condition, save it and reuse it. Detach the upper radiator hose from the radiator, and disconnect the expansion tank hose from the tank. For 3.0L engines on 2008 and earlier models, remove the power steering reservoir mounting nuts, set the reservoir aside, and disconnect the electrical connectors to the fan-control electronic module. Remove the front bumper cover, the headlight housings, the front bumper energy-absorbing foam insert, reinforcement mounting bolts and reinforcement. Remove the condenser line support bracket mounting bolt and move the bracket aside. Remove the radiator mount covers and radiator mount insulators. Remove the radiator support mounting bolts and radiator support. Support the radiator and condenser with wire or rope. Detach the transaxle cooling lines attached to the fan shroud. Remove the shroud mounting bolts and lift out the fan/shroud assembly. For 2009 and later models, remove the air filter housing and inlet air assembly, then disconnect the fan motor electrical connector(s). Remove the upper radiator hose and, on 2012 and later 2.5L models, remove the expansion tank. Remove the lower radiator hose mounting clip to the fan shroud. On automatic transaxle-equipped vehicles, disconnect the clips securing the transaxle cooling lines to the fan shroud. Release the two large clips at the top of the fan shroud and lift the fan/shroud assembly from the vehicle. To detach the fan blade from the motor, remove the nut or retaining clip from the motor shaft. Remove the fan blade from the motor. To detach the motor from the shroud, remove the retaining bolts. Installation is the reverse of removal. Note: When reinstalling the fan assembly, ensure the rubber air shields around the shroud are still in place-without them, the cooling system may not work efficiently. Reconnect the battery, refill the cooling system and bleed the air from the system. Start the engine and allow it to reach normal operating temperature, then check for leaks and proper operation.
