Mazda 6 Flywheel

Rotational energy is stored by the Mazda 6 Flywheel to allow the engine to provide power to the gearbox in a smooth manner in all Mazdas with a stick shift and also provide a smooth surface for the starter and the clutch to operate against. This heavy steel disc is bolted to the crankshaft and smooths out the burst-like power strokes of the combustion engine, and its inertia fills the gaps to make a Mazda feel solid at idle and responsive on the road. By twisting the key on the Mazda, the starter gear engages with the Flywheel ring gear and spins the crank until spark and fuel replace it, after which the clutch pedal is released and the disc closes between the Flywheel face and pressure plate to transfer torque to the transmission. Over the years two styles have emerged, the solid single piece design and the dual mass unit that is designed to absorb vibration, using a secondary mass and a spring-filled damper which gives gentler gear changes, and in later 6 editions, higher torque. It is possible to get a solid unit resurfaced to correct minor spots of heat or grooves, but a dual mass item typically needs replacement due to the tendency to empty out the material, disturbing the accurate spacing of its two pairs, and broken internal springs causing rattling or shaking in the driveline. Too much heat on the clutch, deformed faces, or broken ring gear teeth are still the highly prevalent causes that cause Mazda owners to require a new disc.

Mazda 6 Flywheel Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How does the Flywheel function in the removal and reinstallation of a transaxle for four cylinder engine on Mazda 6?
    A:
The first step to take is to check the parts such as oil seals and change them, in case they are not valid. In the case of manual transaxles, the release bearing and the clutch components and the clutch should be inspected and changed. To get access to the components, the clutch should be removed first. Mark the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft with alignments marks to make it easy to replace it because the holes of the bolts are not aligned. Unscrew the bolts holding the flywheel/driveplate in place; work the transaxle mounting bolt and a wide-bladed screwdriver to ensure that the flywheel does not turn. Take off all the bolts one after another with the replacement being secured new ones since they are subjected to extreme stresses. The heavy flywheel/driveplate should be carefully removed. Wipe off the flywheel to remove the grease and oil and check the flywheel cracks, rivet grooves, burnt spots, and score marks with light scoring being easy to remove with the emery cloth. Inspect teeth of ring gears- crack and broken teeth should be found and inspected with straight-edge to check warpage. Clean and wipe the mating surfaces of the flywheel/driveplate and crankshaft, change oil seal when leaking particularly in high-mileage engines. When the flywheel/driveplate is off clean its inboard face and the recesses that hold the crankshaft speed/position sensor making sure the sensor itself is firmly held in place. Installation: When installing, the engine/transaxle adapter plate must be fitted, the flywheel/ driveplate should be positioned to fit the crankshaft by the marks made during the removal and new bolts should be installed which should be tightened using the hands. Secure the flywheel / driveplate in the manner of disassembly with the bolts being tightened in a diagonal pattern and progressively tightened to the final torque. The other part of the installation is in the same way of removal.
  • Q: How to remove the flywheel/driveplate for V6 engine on Mazda 6?
    A:
This procedure is essentially the same as the flywheel/driveplate removal procedure for the four-cylinder engine, but it is important to use the bolt torque listed in the Specifications. On 3.7L engines, the bolt pattern of the driveplate will only align one way with the crankshaft flange.
