Mazda 6 Timing Cover

The Mazda 6 Timing Cover prevents the timing belt or chain of the engine from getting grime and other road debris in order to ensure the motor maintains its rhythm one mile after another. The Timing Cover is designed using strong aluminum, plastic, or steel to form a strong shield that prevents contaminants, reduces the splash of oil, and keeps the belt or chain aligned perfectly with the camshaft and crankshaft. It is usually lined along its edge with a molded gasket which jams down after being bolted in place to ensure that moisture and grit do not get to the delicate timing teeth. The Mazda 6 has over the years stuck to two major configurations, one being the cover type that secures engines that are dependent on a flexible timing belt and the other configuration covers units that are propelled by an attached metal timing chain, but they adhere to the same plain formula of covering key components of the engine with a protective shell. The big difference between the two is the choice of materials, with lightweight plastic covers offered to cut down on the weight of commuter-oriented trims, and aluminum or steel covers that are heat-resistant, needed for more intense Mazda uses. Any hard shell may crack or even bend with no warning, and a faulty Timing Cover may lead to slippage of the belt or chain that may toss the valve timing in the blink of an eye. Replacing the Timing Cover and its gasket gives back the seal which makes any Mazda run, with the vehicle running on and giving the Mazda 6 reliable and refined performance over the years.

Mazda 6 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Timing Chain, Timing Chain Tensioner and Timing Cover on Mazda 6?
    A:
In order to remove timing chain cover, disconnect the negative battery cable first, and loosen the water pump pulley bolts and remove the drive belt, drive belt idler pulley and water pump pulley. The next step is to remove the crankshaft pulley keeping the engine in TDC and the valve cover open. Unscrew the electrical connector of Crankshaft Position sensor and unscrew the sensor, and remember that a new sensor should be used every time. Hold the engine in high place and lift it such that the right engine will be unattached. Before removing the bolts and the timing cover, disconnect the electrical connector to the power steering pressure switch, unbolt the power steering pump with the hoses not disconnected, and remove the crankshaft front oil seal. Installation requires that the removal steps be reversed with one following the removal of the RTV sealant ensuring that the mating surfaces are clean, the engine cover is installed within four minutes of the RTV sealant being applied, the bolts are tightened one at a time to the specified torque, the engine is re-timed and the sensor mounting bolts are not tightened until the installation tool is in place. To remove the timing chain and tensioner, remove the timing chain cover then hold the chain tensioner ratchet arm out of the way, compress the timing chain tensioner piston with a pin to hold the piston in the compressed position. In case the ratchet requires resetting, take off the tensioner, unstrain the tension on the ratchet mechanism, and putting back the tensioner. Installation Once the two tensioner mounting bolts have been removed, loosen the loose timing chain guide and timing chain and, depending on the installation, loosen the left chain guide and camshaft sprockets. Installation involves, removing a camshaft alignment tool (1) should it be installed, loosening, but not removing both left sprocket camshaft bolts, ensuring that the camshaft is in place and then attaching the left chain guide, timing chain and right chain guide. Install the tensioner of timing chain, screw the fasteners and unscrew the pin to connect to chain guide. Install the camshaft alignment tool again and tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts using the camshafts but do not just use the alignment tool. Lastly, fit timing chain cover.
  • Q: How can the timing cover be removed on Mazda 6?
    A:
Timing chain cover can be done on the engine located in the vehicle on 3.0L engines but in 3.7L engines, the engine is to be removed before this can be done; disregard the sequence of steps that do not apply. To start the process of removal, release the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable of the negative battery terminal. Lose the lug nuts of the right front wheel, lift the front of the car and place it on jack stands which hold it firmly and then remove the wheel. Take off the drivebelt, the drivebelt tensioner and two idler pulleys on the front cover. Then take covers off the valves, the alternator, and his mounting bracket, the crankshaft pulley, and the power steering pump. Unscrew the crankshaft position sensor and remove the camshaft position sensors in front of each head of the cylinder. The engine may be lifted up with a hoist or engine support fixture by means of chains attached to the engine lift brackets. Unscrew the electrical connections at the air conditioning compressor, loosen the mounting bolts of the compressor, and shift the compressor aside to access the engine cover, and then remove the compressor bracket of the front cover. In the case of the 3.0L engine, loosen the timing chain cover fastener in stages and uniformly until all the oil pan-to-cover bolts have been removed, then remove the timing chain cover, making sure to record the location of each stud bolt to reinstall it. In the case of the 3.7L engine, take the cover bolts out and fit six bolts in holes that are threaded on the cover and screw them in the same manner to push the cover out of the engine without damaging all the timing chain cover bolts before trying to remove the cover. Dispose the cover-to-cylinder block gaskets. Installation To install: Clean and inspect all timing chain cover sealing surfaces, and take care not to gouge aluminum parts. Install a crankshaft seal in the front cover and place a bead of RTV sealant that is about 1/8-inch in width. Install new front cover gaskets in the grooves of the cover and on 3.7L engines install two dowel pins in certain holes through the engine block. Install timing cover and cover screws with the screws positioned in their correct places and screw them by hand until the cover slides against the block and the cylinder heads. In the case of the 3.0L engine, the bolts must be tightened in the proper order to the required torque and in the 3.7L engine case bolts should be installed in order and tightened to the correct torque value before the Engine Mount is installed. Install the drivebelt and tensioner and tighten the tensioner pulley to the required torque then install the crankshaft pulley. Install the wiring harness connectors to the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors, reconnect power steering pump and hoses, and lastly, replace the rest of the parts, one by one, in the same order as they were removed. Connect the battery back, restart the engine and inspect the leaks.
