Mazda 626 Brake Booster

The Mazda 626 Brake Booster adds additional deceleration force by amplifying the effort you apply to the brake pedal, allowing the car to decelerate with less footwork. In Mazda 626 vehicles, the Brake Booster is positioned between the pedal and the master cylinder, fitted with a cleverly designed chamber where in the pressure disparities do the majority of the work. The Mazda 626 sedan has a vacuum-style Brake Booster which taps engine vacuum in the front shell and lets outside air enter the rear half when you press the pedal, pushing a diaphragm-mounted piston forward to push the master cylinder with much more force than you could make alone. The loss of the vacuum source when the engine stops means that the booster only provides a few assisted presses before it acts as a normal hydraulic circuit. A hydraulic Brake Booster fitted in some vehicles steals fluid pressure either via the power steering pump or a small electric pump, but its function is identical to the vacuum unit, amplifying small pedal movement into hard hydraulic action. The major difference between the two is the energy supply, where the vacuum types rely on manifold vacuum and the hydraulic types rely on pressurized fluid, allowing them to continue running in Mazda engines that do not generate much vacuum, like some turbocharged engines and some diesel engines.

Mazda 626 Brake Booster Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What maintenance is necessary for the Brake Booster, and what steps should be followed for its dismantling and installation on Mazda 626?
    A:
No special maintenance is needed in the power brake unit, except that the hoses should be inspected periodically, as well as the air filter below the boot where the pedal pushrod enters. Power brake unit dismantling requires special tools and in case of any issue then it is better to change the unit of power brake with a new one or a factory change unit rather than trying to overhaul the existing booster. In order to start with, loosen up the mounting nuts, which hold the master cylinder to the power brake unit, unplug the connector of the brake fluid level sensor, and put the master cylinder in place without over straining the lines. In case the lines are doubtful of flexibility, disconnect them at the cylinder and plug the ends. The second step would be to un-hook the vacuum hose to the front of the power brake booster and seal the end of the hose. To access the under dash blower air duct, inside the vehicle, remove the split pin, and clevis pin to unattach the power brake pushrod to the brake pedal but do not force the pushrod to the side. Then place the four booster mounting nuts aside, and then lift the unit out of the engine compartment with great care. To install, loosely fit the four mounting nuts, pushrod to the brake pedal, tighten the nuts, and re-fit the vacuum hose and master cylinder. In case the hydraulic brake lines are not connected then the whole brake system must be bled to remove all air which can have found its way into it.
